Than the "AussieDoodle" may be the dog for you!
Country of Origin: The Aussiedoodle is a relatively new crossbreed, as
recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, of an Australian Shepherd
X Poodle and demonstrates a combination of traights from both breeds. The
key to cross breeding two purebred dogs is what is called hybrid vigor,
the breeding resulting in a healthier dog with superior genetic
constitution. The idea of crossing with the Poodle is because of their
Non-Shedding coat and has gained much popularity, particularly with those
who suffer from pet related allergies. Like other  'designer breeds'
AussieDoodles has seen a recent surge in popularity. Some breeders
produce
AussieDoodles by crossing a purebred Poodle with a purebred Australian
Shepherd (called a first generation cross), but others allow crossing
AussieDoodles with Poodles or Australian Shepherds (called a backcross).
Differant crosses can result in differant characteristics. The
AussieDoodle is commonly much healthier and tends to live longer than
their purebred ancestors.  AussieDoodles make wonderful family pets and
are used as dedicated service or therapy dogs. This is an attractive dog
that come in a variety of colors. AussieDoodle breeders also aim to
retain the gorgeous coloring of the Australian Shepherd.
Size:  The AussieDoodle has an average shoulder height of 10-25 in and
weighs 15-65 lbs. AussieDoodles resulting from crosses with Toy Poodles
are smaller than those resulting from crosses with the Miniature or
Standard Poodles. As a crossbreed, the AussieDoodle has a wide variety of
appearances. AussieDoodle muzzles are ussually more square in shape than
the muzzles of the Australian Shepherd parent breed. Tail can be long and
feathered or docked depending on the breeder as is the parent breed
Australian Shepherds tail is docked.
Coat:  Due to the Poodle influence, the Aussiedoodle may have a wide variety of coats. The AussieDoodle coat length is generally moderate, can
be straight or slighty wavy and appears shaggy but has a soft, silky
texture. Colors can vary widely. AussieDoodle puppies often retain the
merle and tri-colors of the Australian Shepherd, including blue merle (
marbled gray and black), red merle (red and silver or buff marbled),
black
and red tri. Eye colors also vary, with golden brown eyes being most
common, but also appearing in shades as dark brown ,green and blue.
Character:   The Aussiedoodle is extremely intelligent, friendly and
family orientated. They excel in agility and are quite often used as
service or therapy dogs. They love to play and are just as content to lay
at your feet. AussieDoodles love their family, highly loyal and always
aiming to please.
Temperament:  AussieDoodles are known for their amazing intelligence and
their sweet, yet outgoing personalities. Interacting well with other
pets,
they are touted as being an outstanding family dog, with plenty of
patience for even small children. AussieDoodles are friendly to everyone
with proper socialization. They do not make good watch or guard dogs but
are worthy companions.
Care:  Depending on the coat type, The AussieDoodle requires occasional
brushing or professional clipping. AussieDoodles with a loose wave
require
monthly brushing more often for curly coats. Owners may choose to use a
Poodle clip on the AussieDoodle giving them a "merled" Poodle appearance
that is quite differant to the natural shaggy look. When grooming, have
the hair in the ears pulled to reduce the chances of infection. The
AussieDoodle has a life span of 12-15 years. It is susceptible to eye
diseases and hip displasia, but as a mixed breed it is somewhat less
likely to suffer health problems than purebreds ( known as 'hybrid
vigor').
Training:  The AussieDoodle is extremely intelligent and eager to learn. They succeed in obediance and require early socialization. The AussieDoodle will not respond to harsh words, yelling or heavy handed methods.
Training must be done reward, firmness, patience and consistancy. They seem to
thrive in an environment where they are challenged.
Activity: AussieDoodles require exercise and mental stimulation to prevent
boredom. They will do well in an apartment provided that their needs are
sufficiently met. AussieDoodles can live happily on a farm or big city .
Most enjoy swimming, they will thrive with daily walks and playtime.
